Psychodynamic Therapy for Adults and Couples

A supportive space to understand emotional patterns, relationship dynamics, and the experiences that continue to shape your life today.

What is online therapy?

Online therapy is simply a modern way for us to connect. Instead of traveling to my office, our sessions take place over a secure video platform. All you need is a stable internet connection and a quiet space to talk.

Why choose online therapy?
Many people find it much easier to open up and be vulnerable when speaking from a familiar, comfortable space like their own home, rather than sitting in a traditional therapy office.

Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?
Yes. Research shows that virtual therapy is just as effective as traditional in-person sessions for most concerns, with the added benefit of saving you travel time.
Is this connection private and secure?
Yes. I utilize a fully encrypted, HIPAA-compliant video platform to ensure your privacy is completely protected.Who is eligible for online sessions?
I’m licensed to provide therapy for residents of Florida and Colorado.

How can I prepare to get the most out of our session?

  • Verify that you have a strong internet connection or ethernet connection.
  • Ensure your web browser is updated to the latest version.
  • Adjust your lighting so we can clearly see one another.
  • Wear headphones during our session. This minimizes background noise and helps maintain complete confidentiality on your end.

What happens if we run into technical difficulties?
If our video freezes or disconnects, don’t worry. I will try re-connecting first, and if that fails, I will immediately call the phone number we have on file for you so we can finish our session.
Does insurance cover virtual therapy?
Many insurance plans cover telehealth just like in-office visits, but coverage varies. We recommend reaching out to your provider directly to confirm your specific out-of-network or telehealth benefits.
Does insurance cover virtual therapy?
I am an out-of-network provider and do not accept Medicaid. However, many insurance plans offer partial reimbursement for out-of-network mental health services. I can provide a superbill (an itemized receipt) for you to submit to your insurance company. I recommend checking directly with your provider to see what your specific plan covers.
What therapeutic approach do you use for couples therapy and marriage counseling?
For couples, I use PACT (Psychobiological Approach to Couple Therapy), which draws on neuroscience, attachment theory, and nervous system regulation to help partners feel safe, connected, and responsive to each other.
How is PACT different from other forms of couples therapy?
PACT isn’t just about talking through problems or learning communication tips. It focuses on helping couples feel safe, seen, and supported in real time. Using insights from how the brain and nervous system work—along with your unique attachment history—we look at what’s really driving conflict or disconnection.
PACT sessions are active and experiential. Instead of just talking about problems, we work through them together—so you can build a relationship that actually works under stress, not just in calm moments.

About Dr. Nicole McGuffin

Psychodynamic Therapy for Adults and Couples in Southwest Florida

Psychodynamic Therapy for Adults and Couples in Southwest Florida

People often come to therapy because something in their life no longer feels workable. Anxiety, relationship pain, self-doubt, emotional distance, or a sense of being stuck may show up in the present, but often have deeper roots.

My work is psychodynamic and depth-oriented. I pay attention to the emotional patterns beneath the immediate problem: how a person protects themselves, how they relate to others, what they expect emotionally, and what parts of the self have had to adapt, hide, or carry too much.

License and Training

My clinical work is informed by psychodynamic and psychoanalytic psychotherapy, the Masterson approach to developmental trauma, personality, and disorders of the self, PACT Level 3 couples therapy, Gestalt therapy, NARM, neurobiology, and neurofeedback.

These trainings support the work, but they are not the center of it. The center is the person’s lived experience: the emotional patterns, relational history, protective strategies, conflicts, and possibilities for change that emerge in therapy.

How Therapy Begins

1

Schedule a Consultation

Our work begins with a conversation. We'll speak briefly about what is bringing you to therapy, what you are hoping for, and whether working together feels like the right fit.

2

Clarify the Focus

In the early sessions, we will begin to understand the concerns you want to address, the patterns beneath them, and the direction you would like the work to take.

3

Achieve Deeper Change

As therapy unfolds, the work often moves beyond immediate symptoms into the patterns, defenses, and relational experiences that continue to shape your life.

Yes. I offer online therapy for individuals and couples. Online therapy allows clients to meet from a private, comfortable location while still engaging in focused, consistent therapeutic work.

Yes. Online couples therapy can be very effective when both partners are able to meet from a private space and participate without interruption. The work focuses on the patterns between partners, including conflict, distance, repair, communication, and the ways each person responds under stress.

I do not bill insurance directly. Payment is due at the time of service.

If you have out of network benefits, I can provide a superbill that you may submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.

Therapy is a place to speak honestly, notice what keeps repeating, and work through the patterns that shape how you feel, protect yourself, and relate to others. You can bring whatever feels important.
Over time, the work helps make room for more honesty, choice, emotional freedom, and connection.
